40 Days and 40 Nights
Why the dearth of posts? My wife Lisa and I gave up wine for Lent (a 40-day period of penitence and fasting). I imagine that when Easter comes along, there will be a big celebration at our house. We may literally “Roll Out the Barrel”.
I wonder if this is a unmatched feat in the world of wine bloggers. What enthusiast in his or her right mind would give up wine for more than a month? Sure, there are plenty of things to write about, but it’s a little like daydreaming about fine dining whilst stranded on a desert island - it’s a particularly painfull, lust-inducing exercise.
On our little desert isle, we’ve gone in search of other nurishment for basic comfort and found a stop-gap if not overly satisfying substitute to plug the hole in our lives: beer. Since our college days, there has never been more beer flowing out of the fridge and down our gullets. We’ve tried every brand and variety known to man (as long as it’s available at Ray’s Market), but this refreshment pales in comparison to a glass of fermented grape juice. That said, we like it better than Grape Nehi.
Before moving on, I feel compelled to confess that this whole substitution thing doesn’t feel quite right. Our big sacrifice is a little like giving up Snickers bars in favor of peanut butter cookies. Oh well, I guess that it’s the thought that counts.
As Lent rolls along, not knowing (or knowing) that we have made this great sacrifice, wine seems to be showing up at every corner to tempt us. Uncle Mike is even back at it, emailing us recommendations. His latest is Evans and Tate Shiraz, which he describes as “wonderful” (opening a whole world of flavor, smell, and textural possibilities). “You know it’s roughly double what I pay for a bottle of wine, but this one is really good,” says the frugal shopper. According to Mike, the Western Australian wine has been available at Costco for a not-so-spendy $13.49 (that’s in Oregon $). I say “has been available” because he reports that it’s been out of stock lately. It must be “wonderful”.
Try the Evans and Tate for us, since we can only dream about our favorite vice for another two weeks. Let Lisa and I know what you think, so we can enjoy it vicariously.
