The Allure of the Bottle
Wandering through the local market’s robust wine section, my eyes darted from label to label. What looks like a good complement to a nice fat filet? After about 60 seconds, being your traditional guy, I’m getting antsy and ready to complete my mission. I shop in fast-forward mode.
Just then, I spot an oddity: a gimicky bottle of merlot artfully displayed to stand out from the crowd. It’s the kind of bottle (sans the alcohol) that you might find at a souvenir shop. The Southern Oregon red table wine, ”Another !@#% Merlot”, looks to have about two, maybe three small glasses of liquid in it. Still, I can’t resist the shapely bottle, which looks like something that washed up on a sandy shoreline with a worn, decades old message in it.
The quirky container is carefully weighted at the bottom so that it stands mostly upright while angling back (almost like some folks that I’ve witnessed during wine tastings). The whole creamy cork is visible through the clear glass, topped off with a pronounced, lifesaver-shaped rim.
Being a marketing guy, I’m a sucker for creative packaging, and the ~$13 price tag is no more than an eroded speed bump between me and the checkout line. Whether the wine is any good or not, the exotic bottle is just plain pleasing to look at. Its smooth lines, sultry curves, and eye-candy coloring are strangely alluring.
As much as I hate to ”undress” the exotic bottle, we’ll uncork it for the holidays. Truth be told, if it weren’t 10:30 Sunday morning, I’d probably cave in and pour a glass right now. But temptation will get the best of me soon. I’ll let you know if it was worth the wait or just another clever cover-up.
